Three Reasons To Replace Your Kitchen Countertops

Posted on

Kitchen countertops are one of the most important aesthetic and functional installations within your kitchen, as they take up a sizable majority of the surface area within your interior design. Therefore, there are a multitude of different reasons why you may want to consider replacing your kitchen countertops. Understanding some of the reasons why you may want to replace your kitchen countertops can help you decide when to start the project.

Physical Damage

The most obvious sign that you may be overdue replacing your kitchen countertops with new ones is if you notice that there are any signs of physical damage to their surface. This can take many different forms, with different types of damage more likely to occur for different types of material, but in general you'll want to keep an eye out for any major cracks in the surface, roughness or coarseness caused by constant scratches and knife nicks, and surface warping because of heat exposure. Butcher block and laminate countertops, in particular, are at risk of having their surfaces warp or shift over time due to moisture exposure.

Staining

Another important reason why you may want to consider replacing your countertops is if you notice that there are large and unsightly stains on the surface of your counters that cannot be removed through general cleaning. Some countertop materials, if not properly cleaned up in time or if not properly sealed, are absorbent enough to soak in liquids, which makes the discoloration nearly permanent. Keep in mind that for butcher block countertops, you may be able to sand the stains out and apply a new stain onto your counters, effectively creating a new countertop without having to go through the installation process again, but for all other types of materials, you'll have to replace the entire countertop.

Selling

Finally, the last reason why you may want to replace your kitchen countertops has nothing to do with their condition, but rather your plans: namely, you may want to change your countertops out if you are planning on selling your home anytime in the near future. Countertops are a massive part of your kitchen's interior design, and as such can drastically change the appearance and appeal of your kitchen even if you don't change anything else. This can increase the appeal of your home and make offers more likely once your home actually goes onto the market.
